Two cyclist enjoying a family cycling adventure through the woodland around Strontian
Guided MTB Half Day
Cruising down a slope your mountain bike glides effortlessly over the gravel trail. As you round a corner the valley opens up in front of you and you feel compelled to stop and admire the wide vista and mountainous horizon.
Surveying the scenery you see movement beside the trail ahead: a red deer stag standing majestically where you would have been in just a few seconds of cycling!
You both eye each other with curiosity and respect not wanting to be the first to move. Suddenly the deer takes off into the woodland and you resume your journey towards the mountains whilst smiling inside at the encounter.
We may not have any coloured ‘downhill’ trails or way marked XC routes to follow, but we do have lots of wild spaces to escape to and surprise wildlife sightings do happen away from the villages.

Exploring by Mountain Bike allows you to travel deeper into the wild places to see more of the landscape and wildlife – places not easily accessible by walking in one day.
If you want to get away from the towns and deeper into the countryside in order to see mountains and wildlife not easily accessible in one day on foot, then our relaxed guided MTB days will help you to do just that.
Our aim is to get you to locations you may not have considered without a guide and to help build your confidence with some guiding and coaching if you are just starting out off-road.
We can adjust the route and therefore the degree of effort required based upon your family’s experience and fitness, and can make it harder or longer or faster if you are up to it! The minimum age we take on these trips is 12 years. If you have younger children, please consider a Family MTB Half Day instead as these are more suited to children and you get a guide exclusively for your family.
Meet at Otter Adventures base in Strontian (unless other arrangements are agreed in advance) and travel from there, into Sunart or Morvern usually. Some routes do include sections of road cycling but the majority will be off road. Most routes are also suitable for gravel, adventure or cyclocross bikes as well.
Use the ‘Enquire’ button above to send us an email and let us know what you already do and what you’d like us to help you with. Then we will create something just for you and match your day with like minded people.

Guided MTB Half Day
You should meet at Otter Adventures base in Strontian unless we have agreed otherwise in advance. For morning trips please meet at 9.30 am and afternoon trips at 2.00 pm; both sessions last for approximately three hours.
Don’t worry about being early as your guide may be busy preparing for your trip. If everyone arrives at the same time we can all introduce ourselves and your guide can get a feel for your level of experience before briefing you on what you need and where you will be going.
Please arrive wearing suitable clothing for the day as changing facilities are very limited at present.
Before leaving our base, we will undertake a ’M’ check on all bikes in line with best practices to ascertain their suitability for the trip. If you have brought your own bikes, please be prepared to remove them so that every rider can perform the check with their own bike. If anyone in the group is hiring bikes, we will perform the check at the bike hire venue.
Once everyone is ready, we will head off to the location for the day. We can add three bikes to our rack, so we may need to use your vehicle and rack for additional people and bikes. Please let us know if this is likely to be an issue.
Our aim is to be back at Otter Adventures with all equipment returned by 12.30 pm or 5.00 pm. If the weather is amazing, we may be a little late – please let your guide know before the trip starts if you have to be away promptly for any reason.
