Sea kayak journey

Sea Kayak Journey

from £80

As your kayak glides effortlessly over silken waters, a seal pops up just a few meters from you. You stare at each other for a few moments and become mesmerised by its big, black eyes. Silently it raises its nose to the sky and slides below the water.

Another seal appears behind your partner’s kayak; and another behind you – you begin to wonder if they are surrounding you like cowboys and indians!

With a smile on your face and a picture of seals, kayaks and your partner ingrained in your head, you excitedly swap stories of the experience as you resume paddling gently towards your destination.

All about the Sea Kayak Journey.

Guided sea kayak journeys are currently limited to just four people at a time so as to keep the experience personal or to allow complete beginners to explore Ardnamurchan from the water. They are also ideal for couples who wish to have one guide to themselves for the duration.

Sea Kayak Journeys are a full day (10:00 to 16:00) and £80 per adult / £50 per child (12+ years).

If you would like to enhance it with a locally sourced gourmet lunch drawing predominantly upon produce grown, reared or caught in Strontian, possibly cooked over a wood burning stove or open fire, then please let me know and this can be added for £20 per person.

Throughout your journey you will be accompanied by me, a fully qualified and experienced local guide, who is there to ensure you get the most from your trip by tailoring it to your experiences and aspirations. I will offer advice as necessary, perhaps on efficient paddling, look after your safety throughout the trip and highlight any wildlife that appears or can be found as well as tell you any relevant local cultural or historical sights or stories.

While I certainly intend you to stay in your kayak and dry, very occasionally people do capsize and fall in and it does (only occasionally) rain in Scotland, so please dress appropriately. Changing facilities are very limited at present, so please come ‘dressed’ for the day and do your best to keep the kayak upright!

You may be asked to help move and lift kayaks during the day, so please let your guide know if this is going to be difficult for you or if you have any medical or dietary concerns that may affect your participation in the day.

Above all, enjoy your adventure and keep your fingers crossed for an otter to make an appearance!

  1. Sea Kayak Journey Arrangements

I will meet you at Otter Adventures in Strontian at 10:00 unless we have arranged anything different. If we have, details will be on your invoice and will have been communicated well in advance.

Don’t worry about turning up early: I’ll be pretty busy checking weather and tide forecasts, loading the trailer and generally planning the most suitable options for your journey.

Please do arrive wearing suitable clothing for the day as changing facilities are very limited at present.

When you arrive I will have a chat with you about your experiences and aspirations for the day before giving you appropriate paddlesport specific waterproofs to wear as well as a buoyancy aid. We’ll choose the right kayaks for you and can provide a dry bag for you to put things such as spare jumpers, snacks, etc. into if needed.

We may ask for help loading and unloading equipment – especially the kayaks – so, please let your guide know if that is going to be difficult for you.

Once everyone is ready, we will head off to the location for the day. This may be on Loch Sunart – right outside our front door – but the wind and tide may mean that we have to go elsewhere. Don’t worry: we have ample water to choose from within 20 minutes drive.

Our aim is to be back at Otter Adventures with all equipment returned by around 16:00. If the weather is amazing and the seals or otters performing, we may be a little late – please let your guide know before the trip starts if you have to be away promptly for any reason.
